Cockle Island Boat Club is gearing up for an exciting event on 28th September 2024 – the Pursuit Race. Organized by Race Officer Terry Graham, this annual race promises a day of great competition and camaraderie on the water.
What’s a Pursuit Race? Unlike traditional races where all boats start together, in a pursuit race, the starting times are staggered. Boats with higher handicaps start earlier, and the faster boats start later, making for an interesting challenge where it’s all about catching up and overtaking.
The idea is that, ideally, all boats should finish at roughly the same time, adding an element of suspense as the race progresses.
The Race Day Lineup Here’s a look at some of the key participants and their start times:
Dovelet (T1) will be the first to set off at 14:30:00.
Scamp (369) follows soon after at 14:30:13, and Caterina (663 C) at 14:30:26.
Further down the lineup, we have Plexus (3477 Y) starting at 14:31:01, and Shades of Dawn (K 1441 T) at 14:31:54.
As the race progresses, more boats will enter the course, with the final competitor, Trinulco (9400), starting at 14:56:21. The aim for all participants will be to cross the finishing line before the race ends at 16:00:00.
Why Attend? For those in the sailing community or anyone interested in the sport, this will be an enjoyable event to follow. With the staggered start, the pursuit format makes it easy to see how different boats and crews perform against one another. It’s a great opportunity to support local sailors and spend time by the water.
Looking Forward to a Great Day on the Water Whether you’re participating or spectating, the Cockle Island Pursuit Race promises to be a relaxed yet competitive afternoon of sailing. We look forward to seeing who can navigate the course most effectively and cross the finish line in time.
